Designing the Area

  • Sketch the garden on paper and then transfer it to the landscape.
  • Drag a hose/stretch a string onto the lawn and outline the shape of the garden, using soft lines and curves like an oval or kidney shape rather than a square.
  • Use color on the rain garden plans to devise an overall color scheme.
  • Think about how tall the plants will be (don’t plant a short bluebell behind a tall cup plant – you won’t see the bluebell!).
  • Consider blooming time, and integrate species that bloom in the spring, summer, and fall.

The pictures to the right show an overhead view and a cross-sectional view to give an overall look for the size, shape, plant height, and color scheme for the garden.
